DATE: NOVEMBER 2017
CLIENT: WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY
Every November, the WSU Foundation holds a day-long marathon fundraising event called the "Day of Giving" - the 2017 appeal worked to raise funds and awareness combatting student food insecurity.
The video office was given a script and a conceptual request that we incorporate a text message conversation somehow. The project manager's initial idea was to film two students having this conversation with each other on their phones, using pop-up bubbles to display the text more clearly. I felt that a more minimal, graphics-only approach would provide a more subtle vehicle - and that a flat graphic aesthetic would help viewers focus on the overall messaging of the piece.
I used Photoshop to mock up the phone interface (using material elements that were not easily identifiable as one mobile device or another). Once those graphics were ready, I animated the message bubbles and the keyboard texting action in AfterEffects and finished the piece with a little sound design in Premiere.
This project was awarded Silver for Fundraising Videos in the 2018 International CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) Circle of Excellence competition.
